The Essential Role of Federal Labor Market Statistics
Andrew Reamer, APDU president and nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, has published “ Putting America To Work: The Essential Role of Federal Labor Market Statistics.” Reamer argues that a healthy federal labor market statistics system is critical for the proper functioning of U.S. labor markets—students, workers, educators, employers, and policymakers need good data to make informed decisions about careers, program offerings, and public investments. The paper provides recommendations for low-cost, high-impact actions to boost the statistical system, which includes the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the National Center for Education Statistics, the Employment and Training Administration, the Census Bureau, state labor market information agencies, and state education agencies.
Census Bureau Releases 2009 ACS 1-year PUMS
The Census Bureau announced that it has released the 2009 ACS 1-year Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) files. These files are an extract of the full data set, released in a manner that avoids disclosure of information about households or individuals. PUMS files allow advanced data users to create customized tabulations beyond the standard tables.

Calls for Comment
APDU maintains a list of open calls for comment on proposed federal data collections (http://www.apdu.org/advocacy.asp). We periodically alert APDU members to newly added calls for comment. Over the last several weeks, calls for comment on the following proposed data collections were published in the Federal Register (with due date):
Bureau of Labor Statistics
Occupational Safety and Health Administration
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
APDU encourages its members to take advantage of these opportunities to make their voices heard. All comments, whether a simple affirmation or detailed suggestions on instrument design, are helpful in seeing that data users have access to the statistics we need.
