Census Bureau Introduces New Economic Indicators Search Tool
The Census Bureau has announced the availability of a new Economic Indicators Search Tool for finding, downloading, and using data from economic indicators. Users can access data from multiple indicators in one place and all in the same format. The tool allows users to create data tables in ASCII text or time series charts in spreadsheet format. Users can select an indicator and choose data by item, time period, and other dimensions using drop-down menus. Of the Census Bureau’s 12 economic indicators, four are operational in the new tool now — international trade, manufacturers shipments, monthly wholesale trade, and quarterly services; the remainder are expected to be available in this database throughout the course of 2011.
BLS Symposium on Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey
The Bureau of Labor Statistics is hosting a day-long symposium on its Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) on December 10, 2010 in Washington, DC. The JOLTS program, now 10 years old, supplies monthly economic information about job openings, hires, and separations. JOLTS data can be used in conjunction with other economic data series to construct Beveridge curves and other tools of economic research. The Symposium will bring together a number of leading economists to discuss their work that includes JOLTS data and also to develop a vision for the future of the program. The symposium will be held at the BLS Conference Center, 2 Massachusetts Avenue N.E., Washington, D.C. 20212. Registration begins at 8:30 AM, the program starts promptly at 9:15 AM. RSVP here or call John Wohlford at 202-691-6480. Seating is limited.
APDU Hosts Two Well-Received Webinars
“User Needs for Calculating Standard Errors in the ACS,” presented by Doug Hillmer, an Independent Consultant, took place on October 15, 2010 and examined the need for a statistical calculator tool for researchers using the ACS and what the requirements for such a tool might be.
“Collaborative, Online Mapping: The New ArcGIS.com” was held on November 10, 2010, with presenters Walter Potts and Adam Seamans from Esri. This webinar examined the new, interactive features of Esri’s website that enable users to create maps online and share them with others and featured a live demonstration of the site’s functionality.
Both PowerPoint presentations can be found here, and the webinar recordings can be found in the Members Area.
Data Update Takes A Break
In recognition of the Thanksgiving holiday, there will not be an APDU Data Update next week. The next update will arrive on Thursday, December 2nd. We hope everyone has a nice Thanksgiving holiday.
Notable Data Publications
Each week, the APDU Data Update identifies recent statistical agency data releases and discussions of interest to APDU members.
Calls for Comment
APDU maintains a list of open calls for comment on proposed federal data collections (http://www.apdu.org/advocacy.asp). We periodically alert APDU members to newly added calls for comment. Over the last several weeks, calls for comment on the following proposed data collections were published in the Federal Register (with due date):
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
Office of the Secretary, HHS
Office of Innovation and Improvement, ED
Office of Justice Programs
National Agricultural Statistics Service
APDU encourages its members to take advantage of these opportunities to make their voices heard. All comments, whether a simple affirmation or detailed suggestions on instrument design, are helpful in seeing that data users have access to the statistics we need.
