What’s at stake for the U.S. Census Bureau? The House Passes FY11 Continuing Resolution
On February 19th, the U.S. House of Representatives passed its version of a long-term Continuing Funding Resolution (H.R. 1) for fiscal year 2011 (FY11). The bill appropriates $833.7 million for the Census Bureau’s Periodic Censuses and Programs (“Periodics”) account, a reduction of $152.9 million, or 15.5%, from the President’s FY11 budget request of $986.6 million. The Periodics account covers the decennial census (e.g. 2010; 2020); American Community Survey (ACS), part of the decennial census; quinquennial (five-year) Census of Governments and Economic Census; intercensal population estimates program; and other cyclical activities.

The Case for Enhanced National Business Dynamics Statistics and How to Get There
AmstatNews, the magazine of the American Statistical Association, recently published a piece by E.J. Reedy of the Kauffman Foundation on business dynamics in the national statistical system, “How the Statistics System Can Help Create Jobs”. Reedy makes the case for improved data on business finance operations and investments in innovation, especially at the regional and local level, as a means of helping policymakers to target job creation programs. Reedy discusses the publicly available National Business Dynamics Statistics, what data are needed moving forward, and the type of leadership required within federal agencies to successfully take up this task.
