Statistics of Governments: A General Overview
June 15, 2011
1:00 – 2:00 PM EDT

The U.S. Census Bureau’s Census of Governments program provides for the collection, tabulation, and dissemination of financial statistics of the nearly 90,000 state and local governments in the United States.  These data provide the only source of comprehensive and uniformly classified data on the economic activities of state and local governments.  This presentation will provide an overview of the Census of Governments (CoG) and its related annual and quarterly programs, including the three basic components of the CoG: organization, employment, and finance.  It will explain how the data are defined and why they may be different from other data on state and local governments.

Presenters:

  • Christopher Pece, U.S. Census Bureau
  • Dr. Donald Boyd, Rockefeller Institute
  • Jackie Byers, National Association of Counties
