House Fails to Pass Amendments Reducing Funding for USDA Statistical Agencies

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) and Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) recently proposed amendments to H.R. 2112 that would significantly reduce spending for key statistical agencies in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, including the Economic Research Service and National Agricultural Statistics Service.  Both amendments failed to pass.  
 

 

Census Bureau Request for ACS Sample Size Increase Approved

 

The Census Bureau recently requested approval from the Office of Management and Budget for an increase in the American Community Survey sample size.  This request was approved June 7, 2011.  The total ACS sample size is now 295,000 households per month, an increase of 45,000 households from the previous monthly sample size.  Access related supporting documentation here.  
 

 

Beta Version of Updated DataFerrett Released

The Census Bureau recently released an updated Beta version of DataFerrett, which includes new features that enable users to access additional summary levels from the 2005-2009 5-year ACS Summary File.  Learn more about the additional summary levels here by clicking “Details.”  This Beta version will be available until approximately June 21, 2011.  
 

 

OnTheMap for Emergency Management Version 2.0

The Census Bureau recently released OnTheMap for Emergency Management 2.0.  Version 2.0 includes the following features and enhancements:

  • Real time updates for hurricanes, floods, and wildfires
  • Expanded hurricane detail (forecast area, current wind radii, wind history)
  • Expanded reports with new beta data on demographic characteristics (race, ethnicity, educational attainment)
  • Improved user interface with new map, navigation, and search tools
  • Map animation and timeline for viewing daily event histories

National Assessment of Educational Progress Database Training

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is sponsoring a three-day advanced studies seminar on the use of the NAEP database for education research and policy analysis.  The main NAEP database contains nationally representative achievement scores on 4th, 8th, and 12th graders from public and non-public schools in a variety of academic subjects.  The database also contains background information on the students who were assessed and their learning environments.  This seminar is designed for faculty and advanced graduate students from colleges and universities.  Education researchers and policy analysts with strong statistical skills from state and local education agencies and professional associations are also welcome.
