CJS Subcommittee Releases FY2012 Appropriations
The Senate Commerce, Justice, Science Committee recently released its FY2012 appropriations bill. The bill includes an eight percent cut to the Census Bureau budget, a notable improvement over the House mark, which represented a 25 percent cut. Census Bureau Looks at the Future of Producing Statistical Information
Over the past two years the senior leadership of the Census Bureau has been engaged in a series of organizational change initiatives designed to improve its ability to supply the country with credible and cost-efficient economic and social statistics. Director Groves dicusses potential changes in a recent blog entry.

Census Bureau Releases Documentation Supporting the Upcoming 2010 ACS 1-Year Estimates
On September 22, 2011, the Census Bureau will release the 2010 ACS 1-Year Esitmates. To prepare for the release, new and updated documentation is available. This documentation includes:
- New, modified, & removed tables
- Code lists
- Subject definitions
- Group quarters definitions
- Instructions for applying statistical testing

Education Department Releases Interactive Website on K-12 Education Data
The Committee on Learning Sciences of the National Academies of Science ED Data Express adds new data visualization tools, enhanced documentation, and social networking options for users. The site consolidates relevant data collected by the Department from several different sources and provides a variety of tools that allow users to explore the data and create individualized reports. Version 2.0 of ED Data Express offers a new visual layout and provides the public with more dynamic tools to interact with the data.

APDU maintains a list of open calls for comment on proposed federal data collections (http://www.apdu.org/advocacy.asp). We periodically alert APDU members to newly added calls for comment. Indiana State Library Webinar: Navigating the New American FactFinder

Learn to access data using the new version of the Census Bureau’s American FactFinder. We will focus on the basic steps used to access 2010 Census population data using the new interface. If you’re familiar with Census data but don’t know where to get your 2010 numbers, this is the workshop for you. Special attention will be paid to the data needs of government agencies, libraries, and non-profit organizations.
