Open Data Going Global
Open Data took another leap forward at the G8 Summit in Long Erne, Northern Ireland, as member countries signed an Open Data Charter to spur the release and use of government-held data to advance economic opportunity, spur innovation, and increase accountability around the world. The Open Data Charter outlines principles that member countries—the US, UK, France, Canada, Germany, Russia, Italy, and Japan–will act on, including an expectation that all government data will be published openly by default, and that signatories will work to increase the quality, quantity, and re-use of released data. Will PRISM Hinder State and Local Open Data Efforts?
In recent years, many state and local governments have put effort into open data projects that would inspire developers to create apps and find ways to use public data to bring value to their communities. The U.S. Department of Labor has announced $6.4 million in grants for the third round of the Workforce Data Quality Initiative, which is designed to improve the quality and availability of workforce data. The grantees include four states that will begin to develop their longitudinal databases (Kansas, Oregon, North Carolina and Wyoming) and two states that intend to expand work already initiated on their databases (Ohio and Virginia). Information gathered through this initiative will be used to develop tools to help users learn about the benefits of the publicly-funded workforce system. Read more here.

Innovators Address the Wage Gap with Apps and Open Data
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Equal Pay Act by President Kennedy, President Obama recognized innovators who have used open government data to build tools that address the wage gap. That gap has grown considerably smaller since the Kennedy era, but it has not disappeared. To address this challenge, the Equal Pay Task Force and the U.S. Department of Labor put out a call to build applications and tools that use publicly available open government wage data and other online resources to educate users about the pay gap and to promote equal pay.
