FOIA Summit by the Numbers

On October 10 – 11, OpenTheGovernment.org kicked off an effort to create a more vibrant and better coordinated effort to make the FOIA work better for the public.  Items on the agenda included creating a vision for the Office of Government Information Services, the FOIA Ombudsman; making more records available without having to file a FOIA request; making sure agencies are not over-applying exemptions; and improving the federal government’s record keeping practices.  Read more here.

Modern day slavery directly affects 29 million people in the world today – that’s according to a new index which has sought to look at this empirically by measuring the prevalence of slavery by population, child marriage and human trafficking on a country by country basis.  Read more here.

Wickr Releases Self-Destructing Data App

Founded by an organizer of the hacker convention Def Con, the new Wickr app brings “top secret communication tools to the family.”  All eight of the co-founder’s children are under Facebook age, so she wanted to bring additional security to increase her comfort level during online searches.  Through Wickr’s security use of encrypted messages, private messages and pictures cannot be traced or archived.  Read more here.
