APDU Seeks Member to Join Nominations Committee
APDU elections will be held in December for Secretary, Treasurer, and one at-large Board Member. The Board’s nominations committee will be forming in October and is in need of one non-Board APDU member to join the committee. If you are an APDU member that is interested in joining the committee, please contact Andrew Reamer by October 7.
More FY2012 Senate Appropriations Released
The Senate Subcommittee on Labor, Health & Human Services, Education, & Related Agencies recently released its FY2012 appropriations, including appropriations for the Bureau of Labor Statistics, National Center for Education Statistics, and National Center for Health Statistics. Funding for statistical agencies appears relatively flat. Access the report and bill text.
NCES Releases Guidelines for Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems Application Process
The National Center for Education Statistics, under the Institute of Education Sciences, invites state educational agencies to apply for grants to assist them in developing and implementing statewide longitudinal data systems in the FY12 SLDS competition. Applicants may apply for funds to carry out projects to address one of the following priorities:
To design, develop, and implement a statewide, longitudinal kindergarten through grade 12 (K-12) data system ($5 million maximum award)
To develop and link early childhood data with the state’s K-12 data system ($4 million maximum award)
To develop and link postsecondary and/or workforce data with the state’s K-12 data system ($4 million maximum award)
The submission deadline is 4:30 p.m. on December 15, 2011. Learn more here.
Census Bureau Releases 2010 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates
In case you missed them in the Data Update’s absence during the APDU Annual Conference, the 2010 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates are out! This release covers more than 40 topics, including educational attainment, income, health insurance coverage, occupation, language spoken at home, nativity, ancestry, and selected monthly homeowner costs. New Census Economic Indicator Database Search Available
Statistics from 12 economic indicators are now easy to access and easier to use with the new economic indicator database search. With the release of the Quarterly Financial Report for retail trade, all 12 of the Census Bureau’s economic indicators are accessible in this user-friendly Internet tool. The search tool provides an easy way to create statistical tables in ASCII text or time series charts in spreadsheet format. Users can select an indicator and choose statistics by item, time period, and other dimensions using the drop-down menu.
NCES releases The Condition of Education 2011
The Condition of Education 2011 summarizes important developments and trends in education using the latest available data. The report presents 50 indicators on the status and condition of education and provides a closer look at postsecondary education by institutional level and control. The indicators represent a consensus of professional judgment on the most significant national measures of the condition and progress of education for which accurate data are available. The 2011 print edition includes indicators in five main areas: (1) participation in education; (2) learner outcomes; (3) student effort and educational progress; (4) the contexts of elementary and secondary education; and (5) the contexts of postsecondary education.

The Census Bureau recently launched an updated OnTheMap e-learning tool. This tutorial demonstrates how to use OnTheMap to answer complex questions on the commuting patterns and demographic characteristics of a workforce.
