Census Bureau Proposes Sharing Multi-Location Business Data with BLS

A recent Federal Register Notice requests public comment on the Census Bureau’s intent to share its multi-location business data with the Bureau of Labor Statistics in order to achieve efficiencies in the maintenance of its universe list of U.S. businesses.  This data sharing initiative will improve existing BLS data products or enable the creation of new ones.  For example, the sampling frames for BLS’ Producer Price Index and International Price Program can be enhanced.  The BLS will use the Census Bureau’s product-level codes and the associated data to augment its sampling frames and improve the sampling strategies of these two programs.  Also, this data sharing agreement will improve the comparability and accuracy of Federal economic statistics through the use of more consistent industry classifications.  In addition, certain statistical products, such as BLS’ Business Establishment List, will benefit from improved coverage provided by the additional Census Bureau data.  The BEA will also benefit from more consistent macroeconomic statistics provided by the Census Bureau and the BLS in conducting its national accounts programs.

The public is invited to submit comments on this initiative.  More information is available in the Federal Register notice (above).

LED Partnership Announces OnTheMap Version 6.0

The Local Employment Dynamics program of the U.S. Census Bureau recently released OnTheMap Version 6.0.  This version includes a number of new features that allow users to dig deeper into the data and improves the user experience.  One of the key “under the hood” changes creates a higher capacity operating environment.  Other enhancements include:

  • New charting and mapping capabilities that enable users to control the map, chart, and report outputs to show single characteristics/segments.
  • 2010 Geography:  For the first time, OnTheMap presents all of its data in the new geography base (census blocks and tracts) defined for the 2010 Decennial Census.  Learn more in A Note About Updating OnTheMap Geography.
  • Data for New Hampshire from 2002-2009.
  • The gender variable is now available as a characteristic in Area Profile and Area Comparison for 2009.

Please note that data for 2010 has not been released yet.  Access the new OnTheMap Help and Documentation.
