Census Director Robert Groves to Leave the Commerce Department

Dr. Robert Groves has announced that he will resign as Director of the Census Bureau in August.  Dr. Groves led the Census Bureau for almost three years. During that time, his leadership of the 2010 Census resulted in a historic, successful operation that was completed on time and $1.9 billion under budget.  Dr. Groves helped shape a strategy for planning a more cost-efficient 2020 Census and launched an employee-led operational efficiency program that saved millions of additional taxpayer dollars.  He also led a formal reorganization of the Census Bureau, reestablishing the research directorate to spur technical innovation.  With the implementation of a corporate hiring and job rotation program, Dr. Groves has worked to expand the breadth of skills among Census staff to effectively lead the Bureau into the 21st century.  Read more on his announcment here.

BLS Announces New Publication and Requests Feedback

In May 2012, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) will introduce Beyond the Numbers, a new publication that will consolidate all BLS summary analytic writing into a cohesive conceptual and visual bundle. Beyond the Numbers will illuminate interesting, timely BLS data on discrete topics and will be oriented towards a general audience.  Beyond the Numbers will bring five previously independent publications under a single umbrella:

  • Issues in Labor Statistics
  • Regional Reports
  • Program Perspectives
  • Focus on Prices and Spending
  • OES Data Highlights

In order to help readers find related analyses more readily, and to transition readers from existing, independently branded publications into the new consolidated format, Beyond the Numbers issues will be grouped into topics or themes.  A mockup of the new publication can be found here.  BLS would like to know what you think of the new publication. Please send your comments here.
