Squeezed Out: Mapping Diverse Dimensions of Raleigh NC’s Housing Crisis

Squeezed Out uses practices of critical cartography to better understand complex factors that have contributed to the current state of housing in Raleigh, the Triangle, and beyond. By integrating historic and contemporary data, this research fosters public dialogue and offers innovative, equity-driven design strategies to inform more effective urban development across the U.S. through novel datasets and compelling visual narratives.

This project brings together a multidisciplinary team of scholars and designers from the North Carolina State University’s College of Design, dedicated to investigating housing through critical cartography. The team includes researchers at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels, specializing in architecture and art + design. Led by Sara Queen (Associate Professor of Architecture) and Tania Allen (Associate Professor of Art + Design), the team integrates spatial analysis, historical research, and data visualization to uncover systemic factors shaping housing access. Through innovative mapping and critical inquiry, they examine the housing crisis in Raleigh and beyond, with a deeper understanding of urban equity and informing strategies for more inclusive and resilient development.
