2011 American Housing Survey Public Use File Now Available
The 2011 American Housing Survey Public Use File (AHS PUF) is available for download from HUD USER. The current release also includes the descriptive statistics archive, which gives users a complete listing of the new variables, basic frequencies and statistics, and comparisons with the 2009 survey. The file flattener program, for those users who like to use it, is also available. The updated codebook is not available as of yet. It will be posted as soon as it is ready. In its absence, there has been posted a temporary file explaining the changes in the variables since the 2009 survey.

Census Establishes National Advisory Committee on Racial, Ethnic, and Other Populations
The U.S. Census Bureau has announced the establishment of the National Advisory Committee on Racial, Ethnic, and Other Populations. The committee will advise the Census Bureau on a wide range of variables that affect the cost, accuracy and implementation of the Census Bureau’s programs and surveys, including the once-a-decade census. The committee, which is comprised of 31 members from multiple disciplines, will advise the Census Bureau on topics such as housing, children, youth, poverty, privacy, race and ethnicity, as well as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other populations. 2012 Q3 Quarterly Workforce Indicators (beta) for Firm Age and Size with Demographics Available from Census
The Census Bureau has released to the VirtualRDC the R2012Q3 beta release of Quarterly Workforce Indicator (QWI) files containing augmented tabulations by firm size and by firm age. New in this release is the addition of new tabulation variables: firm age and size are each interacted with the usual demographics: age and sex (“wia“), race and ethnicity (“rh“), and education and sex (“se“) . The time-series is extended to 2011Q4. At present, only users of the SSG compute servers will be able to access the SAS files from the R2012Q3 release at /data/clean/qwipu/state/data. R2012Q3/ in state specific directories. The data are being prepared for web distribution, and an announcement will follow.
Firm age and size data for CA, CO, LA, NJ, and RI are not available. WA, previously not available, has now been added (note: with a shorter time series than the regular QWI). Learn more here.

Data Quality Campaign Turns on Its Flashlight
The Data Quality Campaign (DQC) has announced the debut of its blog, The Flashlight!. On October 1, DQC joined the blogosphere, chiming in on conversation about states’ roles in promoting effective data use to improve student achievement. Their blog is a space to shine light and generate discussion on using data to help students achieve. They address key actions for education reform and the implications of each state’s responsibility to its education data consumers. In addition to weekly blog posts, they will keep readers up-to-date with weekly “Data Flashes” that will share important education data news from around the country.

New Advisory Council on Transportation Statistics Members Named
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has appointed nine new members to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS) 11-member Advisory Council on Transportation Statistics (ACTS). BTS is a part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA). Required by statute, ACTS’ function is to advise on transportation statistics and analyses, including whether the statistics and analysis that BTS disseminates are of high quality and are based upon the best available objective information.
