Census Releases 2009-2011 American Community Survey Estimates
The U.S. Census Bureau has released the latest findings from the American Community Survey, the primary source of small-area estimates available on a wide range of important statistics about people and housing for every community across the country and in Puerto Rico. The estimates released today cover a three-year period from 2009 to 2011 and are available for areas with a population of 20,000 or more. Read more here.

Census Releases New Web Resources
The U.S. Census Bureau has released two new web resources:
These new assets give users improved access to news and information about Census work and easier access to research data tools and opportunities. The Research Matters forum features insight about research developments, issues and history and is penned by working researchers throughout the Census Bureau. In Research Matters, users will hear how the Census Bureau is tackling statistical and methodological challenges, from demography, economics, and other social sciences to methodological questions, such as the role of statistical modeling in surveys, designs for the Decennial Census, and research on record linkage and confidentiality protection.

Deloitte Predicts Big Data to Become a Big Deal
Deloitte predicts that in 2012, “big data” will likely experience accelerating growth and market penetration. As recently as 2009 there were only a handful of big data (BD) projects and total industry revenues were under $100 million. By the end of 2012 more than 90 percent of the Fortune500 will likely have at least some BD initiatives under way. Industry revenues will likely be in the range of $1-1.5 billion. But the industry is still in its infancy. Big data in 2012 will likely be dominated by pilot projects; there will probably be fewer than 50 full-scale big data projects (10 petabytes and above) worldwide. Read the full article here.

Census Bureau Acting Director Receives Executive Leadership Award
The U.S. Census Bureau announced that Acting Director Thomas L. Mesenbourg received the Roger W. Jones Award for Executive Leadership on October 22. Since 1978, American University’s School of Public Affairs has granted this prestigious award to more than 60 federal career executives in recognition of their exceptional federal service and dedication to the work and goals of government.
