APDU Election Results 2012

During the first two weeks in November, APDU held its annual election to the board of directors, to fill the positions of President, Vice President, and one At-Large Seat for terms beginning January 1, 2013.  Andrew Reamer, chair of the Nominations and Election Committee, is pleased to announce the following results:

  • President (2013-2014): Warren Brown, Senior Research Associate, Cornell Institute for Social and Economic Research, Cornell University [currently APDU Vice President]
  • Vice President (2013-2014): Virginia Carlson, Adjunct Associate Professor of Urban Planning, University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee  [currently APDU At-Large Board Member 2010-2012]
  • At-Large Board Member (2013-2015): Kathryn Pettit, Co-Director, National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership and Senior Research Associate, Metropolitan Housing and Communities Policy Center, The Urban Institute

As of the first of the year, current APDU President Robert Scardamalia will become past president and current Past President Andrew Reamer will step off the board. In addition to Dr. Reamer, members of the Nominations and Election Committee included Steve Pierson, Joan Naymark, and Christine Pierce.

Census Bureau Releases Equal Employment Opportunity Tabulation that Provides a Profile of America’s Workforce

The U.S. Census Bureau has released the 2006-2010 American Community Survey Equal Employment Opportunity Tabulation.  The tabulation consists of 107 tables about the labor force crossed by sex, race and ethnicity.  The U.S. Census Bureau has produced this tabulation after every decennial census since the 1970s.  However, for the first time, this tabulation uses American Community Survey (2006-2010) estimates.  View tables here.

 

 

NCES Forms Group on Expanded Measures of Enrollment and attainment

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has formed an interagency working group on expanded measures of enrollment and attainment (GEMEnA).  GEMEnA consists of senior representatives from the Bureau of the Census, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics, as well as Council of Economic Advisors, NCES, Office of Management Budget, and Under Secretary of Education.  With GEMEnA’s expert guidance and support, NCES has embarked upon a multi-faceted effort to apply best-practice survey development principles towards the goal of developing valid national measures of the participation in and credentialing of education and training for work, and to build government-wide consensus for the adoption of these measures.  Learn more here.

 

 

MI Releases Report on “Facts About Modern Manufacturing”

The Facts About Modern Manufacturing, produced jointly by The Manufacturing Institute (MI), the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation, and the National Association of Manufacturers, is a collection of the key facts and figures that define the state of the U.S. manufacturing industry.  The 2012 Edition of the Facts About Modern Manufacturing was published in October 2012 and provides 65 figures that show the importance of the manufacturing sector and challenges that our industry faces.  Read the full report here.

 

 

States Report New High School Graduation Rates Using More Accurate, Common Measure

The U.S. Department of Education released data detailing state four-year high school graduation rates in 2010-11; the first year for which all states used a common, rigorous measure.  The varying methods formerly used by states to report graduation rates made comparisons between states unreliable, while the new, common metric can be used by states, districts, and schools to promote greater accountability and to develop strategies that will reduce dropout rates and increase graduation rates in schools nationwide.  Read the full story here.
 

 

Census Bureau Updates Website on 2012 Economic Census

The 2012 Economic Census is under way.  To help people learn more about the economic census, the Census Bureau has an updated website available that helps answer what the economic census is, why it is important, and how the data are used.  Business.census.gov is a valuable resource for business owners and business leaders to understand the vital role they play in the 2012 Economic Census.  The site contains resources for respondents, such as examples of economic census forms, videos, key dates, and FAQs, and a link to the Business Help Site, with access to electronic reporting software.  Read the full entry here.

 

 

Pew Research Center Conducts Survey about Census Attitudes

This year the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press is conducting a series of studies about the public’s knowledge and attitudes about the 2010 U.S. Census. The first survey in the series, was conducted January 6-10 among 1,504 adults reached on cell phones and landlines, is being released on November 29, 2012.  Read more here.

 

 

CDC Seeks Nominations for Advisory Committee Candidates

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is requesting nominations for candidates to serve on the National Public Health Surveillance and Biosurveillance Advisory Committee.  More information on the nomination process can be found here.
