Agenda, hotel, vendor details released for APDU 2014

The 2014 APDU Annual Conference takes place in Arlington VA, September 16-17. A draft agenda of the two-meeting is now online, along with hotel information, and opportunities for sponsorship and exhibitors. In addition to keynotes, general sessions, and breakouts, there will be new programming, such as IgniteAPDU 5-minute talks on Day 2. Registration is slated to open next week.

Census releases ACS PUMS / DataFerrett videos
The U.S. Census Bureau released two videos about creating custom tables using the American Community Survey Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) files and DataFerrett.

 

What do data journalists need to do differently?
Writing for Harvard Business Review, researcher Liliana Bounegru argues that data journalists should also strive to be critically aware of how established sources frame, shape, bias, and color different issues. In other words, data journalists should strive to go beyond established sources (like government statistics) to find or create their own data in order to bring about fresh reflections and insights or to bring new issues to the public’s attention.

As the only statewide public school system in the nation, the Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) has been collecting student data for decades. However, it’s only within the past few years that the public schools have made a concerted effort to use the data to help students achieve more.
