Big Data Regional Innovation Hubs
The National Science Foundation is exploring the establishment of a national network of  “Big Data Regional Innovation Hubs.” These Hubs will help to continue and scale up the kinds of activities and partnerships established by National Big Data R&D Initiative over the past 3 years, as well as stimulate, track, and help sustain new regional and grassroots partnerships around Big Data.

 

Open Government Groups Confront Obama
A coalition of 25 transparency groups and open government advocates sent a letter to President Obama urging him to either ?withdraw? or ?provide guidance to agencies? on a 2009 White House Counsel memorandum that instructs all federal agencies to consult with White House attorneys on documents of interest to the Administration before releasing them.

Measuring the job-market returns of college credentials is complex work, according to researchers who gathered for a meeting on higher education data. That makes it challenging, or even risky, for policy makers to use those metrics to hold colleges accountable.

In news releases and on social media, many are saying an eleventh-hour adjustment undermined what little credibility the rates had, weakening them as an accountability measure.

 

Investigation of IPEDS Distance Education Data
Based on an investigation of the recently released distance education data for IPEDS, the primary national education database maintained by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), WCET has found significant confusion over basic definitions of terms, manual gathering of data outside of the computer systems designed to collect data, and, due to confusion over which students to include in IPEDS data, the systematic non-reporting of large numbers of degree-seeking students.

New Business Dynamics Statistics Availability
For the first time, Business Dynamics Statistics will be available in the application programming interface.  The API allows more access and easier customization of data products. Developers could use the statistics available through the API to create a variety of apps and tool.

Visualizing Online Code Collaboration
Git Live visualizes real-time global activity on online code collaboration platform GitHub. The visualization shows a variety of different GitHub actions, including instances when users ?star? (i.e. favorite) one another?s work, propose changes to a piece of code, comment with an issue or suggestion associated with a codebase, or create a new project based on existing code.
