A Fight to Keep Question on College Degrees in ACS
A proposal to drop a question about college education from a large annual government survey would make it a lot harder for the National Science Foundation (NSF) to track trends in the U.S. scientific workforce. Social scientists hope to persuade the Obama administration to reject the idea, which stems in part from criticism of the survey by some members of Congress.

Climate Data & Information for Resilient Development
President Obama announced a set of new initiatives aimed at strengthening global resilience to climate change, including a Public-Private Partnership on Climate Data and Information for Resilient Development. This partnership?s mission is to increase resilience to the impacts of climate change and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases in developing countries by harnessing, creating, and providing timely climate data, information, tools, and services. To follow on this Presidential announcement, USAID has released a Request for Information that solicits input from any interested parties on how best to achieve these goals.

A Different View of American Employment
Fifteen states had jobless rates below 5% in October, another sign that the job market continues to recover. Many of those states, though, are small ? or, rather, they aren’t populous. Their collective labor force is smaller than California’s. And not all states are recovering at the same rate, as explained by these (unorthodox) maps, called “cartograms.” The states are sized by their civilian labor force populations, not actual shape, allowing a density-equalized view of the country. So state boundaries are skewed based on their relative density and number of workers.
