OMB Approves 2016 Content Changes On June 30th, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) approved the Census Bureau?s proposal to make the following changes based on the 2014 ACS Content Review:
- Remove the question concerning business or medical office on property
- Retain the question concerning undergraduate field of degree
- Retain the questions concerning marital history
OMB also approved three additional changes resulting from late-breaking developments from the Census Bureau?s ongoing survey improvement research:
- Remove the question about flush toilets
- Reword the questions on computer and internet usage
- Streamline mailing procedures

Houston & L.A. – 2016 Test Sites for 2020 Census The U.S. Census Bureau announced that it plans to conduct census tests in selected areas within Harris County, Texas, and Los Angeles County, Calif., in 2016. The tests will refine new procedures and methods designed to improve census operations and save taxpayers money in the next census in 2020.

Student-Level Data Collection Gains Traction One proposal for strengthening data systems to more effectively promote student success is a federal student-level data system. This memo, authored by IHEP?s Policy Research team, describes the growing tide of support for better postsecondary data, and provides an overview of and side-by-side comparisons of the four pieces of bipartisan legislation introduced since 2012?the Higher Education Affordability Act and three versions of the Student Right to Know Before You Go Act?that call for student-level data collection in varying forms.

When Guarding Student Data Endangers Research There is widespread concern over threats to privacy posed by the extensive personal data collected by private companies and public agencies. Resistance to data collection was inevitable ? and it has been particularly intense in education.

House Ag Bill Would Cut USDA Research & Statistics The USDA?s principal statistical agencies, the Economic Research Service and the National Agricultural Statistical Service, do not fare well under the House bill. The bill proposes an 8.6% cut for ERS, which would bring its funding down to $78.1 million. NASS would receive an $11.2 million cut from FY 2015, leaving it 10.6% below the level proposed in the President?s budget request.

Mapping Food Hygiene with Open Data Liam Curley, a UK-based online marketer, has created a data visualization that plots the hygiene levels of businesses that serve food in London, ranging from restaurants to hospitals. The visualization relies on publicly available data from the Food Standards Agency, the UK?s food safety regulator, and OpenStreetMap, an open source mapping platform.
