Reductions in Data Collection Funding Have Had Impact In the current federal budget climate, data collection is poised to take a big hit. Over the past three years, the BLS has received $80 million less than the president requested from Congress, an average reduction of just over 4 percent. In all likelihood, certain surveys will be cut altogether and that will mean less information to help us understand our economy, know how businesses should and do work, and provide support to people who need it.

Notice on Recommended Changes for NAICS 2017 The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) published a federal register notice inviting comments on the proposed changes to the structure and content of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) for the 2017 revision. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB), through its Economic Classification Policy Committee (ECPC), is soliciting comments as published in the August 4, 2015 Federal Register Notice for possible changes to NAICS.

Senate Panel Approves Public Access Bill Open-access advocates are heralding a Senate panel?s approval today of a bill that would require U.S. science agencies to make the peer-reviewed research papers they fund freely available to the public.

Boston Releases Open and Protected Data Policy Mayor Martin Walsh announced a new policy governing the proper method of opening departmental data in the city. The policy, called the Open and Protected Data Policy, encourages city agencies to publish data sets on the city?s open data portal.

NEA Announces Research Grant Funding Opportunity As the federal agency of record on arts research, the National Endowment for the Arts is doing its part to invest in new arts research with the latest Research: Art Works grant funding opportunity. This program supports research for projects that investigate the value and impact of the arts on individuals and communities. Prospective applicants can learn about the grant process at an upcoming NEA grant guidelines webinar on September 9, 2015 at 3:00 PM ET.

CDPH & St. Joseph Health Partner in Cancer Data Registry The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced a first of its kind partnership with St. Joseph Health to track cancer trends around the state of California. The historic program, announced in a press release on July 27, is the first to directly and securely transmit data from a private healthcare practice to a public research entity.

UK and France Launch Joint Data Initiative The UK and France have set up a joint taskforce to help businesses in both countries make better use of data and provide consumers with more control over the information companies hold about them. By the end of 2015, the data taskforce is due to report to the UK and French governments on work to establish new “principles for improving SMEs? use of data and data science to develop new services/compete with larger players”, a statement by the UK Treasury said.

Mapping America?s Renters A map by the journalist and web developer Ken Shwencke shows just how much the rental market now dominates U.S. cities, even those traditionally defined by high rates of homeownership. ?Where the Renters Are? plots 2013 American Community Survey data on who?s renting (red dots) and who?s owning (blue dots) across the country?s census tracts. The dots, each of which represents 25 housing units, are randomly placed within tracts.
