The Emerging Field of Health Data Science in Boston Mike Klein, a neuroscience Ph.D out of McGill University, has developed technology that can identify early warning signs of heart conditions out of an individual’s Fitbit data as part of the Insight Health Data Science Fellowship. Insight offers a Fellowship three times a year where academics learn the applied data science skills they need to work in industry.

First Big Data Pilot Zone in China Launched China launched its first big data pilot zone in the southwestern province of Guizhou. It is the latest move since China’s State Council issued guidelines to boost big data development.

New Patent Search Tool Could Aid Economic Research A recently released Web-based patent search tool the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office may help shed light on how inventions impact the economy. Called PatentsView, the site allows users to search four decades of patent data by title, name of inventor along with a range of other factors. It offers charts and graphs that illustrate search results, allows researchers to download large amounts of data for in-depth analysis, and has an API ? short for application programming interface ? for programmers who want to link PatentsView information with other data.

FBI Will Collect and Publish Info About Police Shootings Federal authorities plan to collect additional information about shootings involving law enforcement and will begin publishing a report with more details on how police use deadly force, FBI Director James B. Comey said Monday. Comey described this information as necessary for the ongoing debate over policing in the United States.

Mapping Four Decades of Patent Data The U.S. Patent and Trade Office (USPTO) has launched a data visualization tool called PatentsView that maps patent activity in the United States from 1976 to 2014. USPTO created PatentsView in collaboration with the Center for the Science of Science and Innovation Policy, a policy research organization, to allow users to explore trends in patent activity, such as how certain regions may be linked to patents related to certain technologies or who the most accomplished inventors are.
