Census Releases Updated Workforce Data Tools
The U.S. Census Bureau released Version 1.2 of the LED Extraction Tool and QWI Explorer. This update makes the following functionality available:
LED Extraction Tool:
- The Beta release of National Quarterly Workforce Indicators (QWI) is now available for query. For additional information about the Beta release of National QWI.
- State totals from multiple states can now be accessed with a single query.
QWI Explorer:
- Data Normalization/Share of Total functionality is now available via checkboxes underneath the X-Axis and Group dropdowns.
- Indicator comparisons are now available by selecting one of three indicator categories (Counts, Rates, or Earnings) in the Group dropdown.
The applications can be accessed by clicking “QWI Explorer” or “LED Extraction Tool“.

Initial Analysis of College Scorecard Data
The full extent of the information released will take months to process. But an initial analysis by the Center for American Progress shows a federal student aid system for which the results are positive but headed in the wrong direction, especially in the for-profit college sector.

Joshua New of the Center for Data Innovation writes that Congress should act so that the successful and popular open data initiatives will continue after a new president is sworn in in 2017. The bulk of any open data legislation could essentially direct agencies to stay the course with existing requirements.

Global Innovation Index 2015 Now Available
The Global Innovation Index (GII) aims to capture the multi-dimensional facets of innovation and provide the tools that can assist in tailoring policies to promote long-term output growth, improved productivity, and job growth. The GII helps to create an environment in which innovation factors are continually evaluated. It provides a key tool and a rich database of detailed metrics for 141 economies this year, which represent 95.1% of the world?s population and 98.6% of global GDP.

Visualizing Actual Flying Time
Ritchie King and Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight have created a data visualization that illustrates the discrepancies in scheduled and actual traveling time for flights throughout the United States. King and Silver analyzed delay data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, part of the Department of Transportation, on every flight by a major airline in the United States in 2014, about 6 million flights in total. Their analysis revealed that certain routes, such as Denver to Boston, typically take longer than their scheduled time, while others, such as Denver to San Diego, typically take less time than scheduled. Their analysis also found that choice of airline plays a substantial role in route performance as well. For example flights on Virgin Airlines typically take seven minutes less than scheduled, and Spirit Airlines flights, on the other end of the spectrum, typically take 11 minutes more than scheduled.
