How Allegheny County?s is Using Integrated Data
Allegheny County, which includes Pittsburgh, is recognized as a leader in using data to improve the results of its human services programs. In particular, the county?s Department of Human Services (DHS) created its Data Warehouse in 1999. The initiative stated by consolidating its own internal human services data relating to topics such as behavioral health, child welfare and homeless services. Over time, the warehouse expanded to include data from other county agencies as well as the Pittsburgh Public Schools.

A Look at How Commerce Data Fuels Innovation
The U.S. Commerce Department is responsible for producing troves of data ? including weather data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), patent applications from the Patent and Trademark Office, demographic information from the Census Bureau, economic data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and export data from the International Trade Administration. This data is the foundation for innovative ideas from the private sector. And during a trip to Silicon Valley on Feb 26, Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker saw firsthand how businesses, both established and startups alike, rely on Commerce data to fuel their ideas.

 

Students Still Need More and Better College Data
Going to college is still a relatively safe bet. The problem is that we don?t yet have good enough information about which colleges and programs offer the best bang for students? often-borrowed buck. Fortunately, a growing number of states and their colleges and universities have decided that better information is not just ?nice to have? but ?must have.?

Dept of Ed Proposes Accurate Grad Rate Reporting
The federal government has proposed to start publishing accurate college graduation rates, by institution, for low-income college and university students who receive Pell Grants. The proposal, based on recommendations from a technical review panel, would change how graduation rates are reported for all students, and is intended to make these figures more accurate than the system being used now, which tracks only graduation rates for college students starting as freshmen who attend school full time.

The Distressed Communities Index
The Distressed Communities Index (DCI) is a customized dataset created by EIG examining economic distress throughout the country and made up of interactive maps, infographics, and a report. It captures data from more than 25,000 zip codes (those with populations over 500 people). In all, it covers 99 percent ? 312 million ? of Americans.
