News

A draft bill introduced in the House would require all congressional bills, resolutions and documents to be published in machine-readable format. The 2014 Digital Accountability and Transparency Act standardizes a government-wide data structure to track federal spending, and the Searchable Legislation Act, introduced July 13 by Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), would similarly standardize an electronically searchable format for federal legislation and congressional records.

Governments at all levels are finding better ways to provide fiscal transparency. But there’s a lot more that they could do.

Few school districts focus on which colleges and universities post high graduation rates for their students. Indeed, while many programs focus on getting students into college ? the Obama administration has made college access and affordability a major priority over the last seven years ? less time and effort is spent on ensuring students make it through with a degree or certificate.

While the first order of business following Brexit will be ensuring British citizens can travel abroad and British companies can access foreign markets, in today?s digital economy there should also be a significant focus on how the UK will ensure the free movement of data both internally and across borders. Fortunately, this is one of the bright spots for the British economy as the UK will now have an opportunity to replace the stringent EU data protection regulations with a more forward-looking set of rules that enable data-driven innovation and in so doing cement the country?s leadership in the digital economy.

New & Updated Data Sources

On July 19, Department of Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker and US Chief Technology Officer Megan Smith hosted ?Hack the Pay Gap Demo Day? at the White House showcasing our data access and usability efforts. The event challenged data scientists, developers and designers to use the Commerce Data Service-built application, MIDAAS, to apply Census income, population and geographic data to create new products and strategies for combating gender-based pay disparities.

Amino?s new price tool lets you comparison shop for healthcare. The tool tells you how much common procedures cost at different hospitals, incorporating elements like your specific health insurance.

Visualization of the Week

The New York Times has created a series of data visualizations called ?Who Will Be President?? forecasting the state-by-state outcomes of the presidential election based on the latest state and national polls. By aggregating data from multiple sources, the site compares predictions from different forecasting organizations and identifies certain states as likely voting Democratic, Republican, or ?tossup? when it?s too close to call. An interactive visualization allows the user to choose the winners in ten competitive states, illustrating the potential paths to victory for each candidate and the likelihood of those happening.
