Census Bureau Awards Cooperative Agreements
The U.S. Census Bureau awarded two cooperative agreements to research teams at Georgetown University and Purdue University. These teams of university-based researchers are at the forefront of the emerging field of privacy-preserving data analysis, and their efforts will assist the Census Bureau in ensuring we continue to be a leader in protecting confidential information.

How Companies Can Help Cities Close the Data Gap
Recent advances in data analytics have revolutionized the way many companies do business. Starbucks, for example, rolls out new beverages and chooses its store locations by analyzing customer, economic and other data. And as Amazon’s customers know so well, the company makes purchase recommendations to them in real time based on items they’ve viewed or bought. So why aren’t more cities leveraging data in the same way to improve services for their residents?

County GDP Stats Give Closer Look at Local Economies
Anyone interested in economic growth in, let?s say, West Virginia can check state GDP data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Want to zoom in on a metro area, such as Charleston, W.Va., and its surroundings? BEA has gross domestic product by metropolitan areas, too. But what if you?re interested in the Marcellus Shale natural gas field that stretches beneath West Virginia and into several other states?  The Marcellus doesn?t follow state lines, or stick to metropolitan areas. How to measure its economic footprint? BEA is exploring an idea that would be a big help: county-by-county GDP.

Fighting Urban Blight with Data
Since New Orleans began its recovery after Hurricane Katrina, the city has been tackling its problem with blighted properties in a variety of ways. Reducing blight has been one of Mayor Mitch Landrieu?s top priorities since he took office in 2010. The city?s successful BlightSTAT performance management approach has been the backbone of efforts that resulted in the elimination of over 15,000 blighted units from 2010 to 2015, accomplished through a mix of demolition, sale, and owner repairs.

GSA and Dun & Bradstreet Renegotiate Contract
Since the 2014 implementation of the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act (DATA Act), the nation?s first open data law, federal agencies have been busy focusing on ways to make data even more transparent throughout the federal space. GSA is heavily involved in these activities, and we are very excited to announce a huge step forward in the goal to make data more accessible and readily available across government.  Previously, the data collected could only be used for a narrowly defined ?acquisition purpose,? greatly restricting the use of all D&B-related information. Our recently renegotiated contract changes that. Now, D&B information can be used for other activities, like compiling research of historical procurement information and conducting trend analysis.

Sharing Geospatial Data to Improve Transportation

Global mapping company Esri is partnering with Waze to make it easier for governments to begin building intelligent transportation systems in their communities. Waze enables users to share and harness the power of anonymous, aggregated data to promote greater transportation efficiency, deeper insight into travel conditions, and safer roads. Governments already using the Esri ArcGIS platform can quickly and easily exchange data through the Waze Connected Citizens Program, a free two-way data share of publicly available traffic information.

50-State Comparison: Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems
Education Commission of the States has researched Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems (SLDS) policies in all states to provide this comprehensive resource. To complement our research, we attempted to reach out to all 50 states and Washington D.C. to gather and verify information.

General Services Administration – Data Federation Portal
In conjunction with the Open Data Summit in September, the GSA launched the U.S. Data Federation portal. The effort builds on data.gov, and is a “coordinating mechanism” for profiles and case studies of agencies’ use of unified and sound data architectures used across government agencies.

Unemployment in America, Mapped Over Time
We often hear about shifting unemployment rate at the national scale. It went up. It went down. It changes month-to-month. But unemployment is very regional, more common in some areas of the country than others. In many areas, unemployment rates remain relatively high despite the decreases in the national average. This visualization used Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates of county-level unemployment to show the shifts over the past few decades.
