Commerce Data Advisory Council October Meeting Leaders from the nation’s technology and data industries came together on Oct. 29-30 for the third meeting of the Commerce Data Advisory Council (CDAC) in Boulder, Colorado. This meeting focused on three main themes: 1) organizing and disseminating troves of environmental data; 2) developing the expertise within government to maximize the value of all the data collected by federal agencies; and 3) ensuring data and other cyber assets are protected from external threats.

BEA Unveiling Data Tool for Faster Access to Econ Stats
In a show of collaboration between the United States and Europe, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) is unveiling a new data tool that aims to make it easier to access, compare and visualize economic data between the two regions. BEA and the Commerce Data Service, which are both part of the U.S. Commerce Department, have teamed up with Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union, to build this new open-source data tool.

Socrata Announces Public Tool Using Commerce Datasets To bring data-driven insights to new audiences, the Census Bureau issued a challenge to the private sector to help build new tools that make their data more actionable. In response, they?re announcing another free, open and public tool built by Socrata that makes a valuable data set from the U.S. Census Bureau more accessible? Small Area Health Insurance Estimates (SAHIE). The SAHIE program annually produces timely estimates for all counties and states, with detailed demographic and income data as well. SAHIE rely heavily on American Community Survey estimates and related administrative records data.

Visualizing the Languages of New York City Web developer Jill Hubley has created a data visualization mapping the most common languages in New York City, broken down by census tract. Users can select individual languages to see where they are the most common, as well as filter out English and Spanish?the most common languages?to see the widely varied demographic makeup of the city?s population. The visualization uses data from the U.S. Census Bureau?s 2014 American Community Survey
