The Center for Data Innovation spoke with David Hand, a data scientist and emeritus professor at Imperial College, London. Hand discussed the opportunities and challenges of big data, and the role of data in policy and services.

At Georgia State?s nursing school, the faculty used to believe that students who got a poor grade in ?Conceptual Foundations of Nursing? probably wouldn?t go on to graduation. So they were surprised, after an analysis of student records stretching back a decade, to discover what really made a difference for nursing students: their performance in introductory math.

 

Surprising Lessons From Research on Data Dashboards

Last year, Blackboard developed new Learning Analytics functionality for the Ultra experience of Blackboard Learn that included student-facing data dashboards. While dashboards are commonplace in some fields (e.g. finance, healthcare), they are not widely used in educational technologies ? and when they are present, are primarily intended for faculty, administrators, and other professionals. There is little known about the impact of student-facing dashboards from educational research. To improve our understanding, Blackboard collaborated on a research study with Dr. Stephanie Teasley, Research Professor at the School of Information at the University of Michigan and Director of the Learning, Education and Design Lab.

Some education researchers have begun downloading federal data amid questions about the new administration’s commitment to continuing transparency efforts.

 

New & Updated Data Sources

 

National Transportation Statistics Updated

The U.S. Department of Transportation?s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) updated National Transportation Statistics (NTS) ? a web-only reference guide to national-level transportation data. NTS, updated quarterly, includes a wide range of national transportation information. NTS consists of more than 260 tables of national data on the transportation system, safety, the economy and energy and the environment, of which 40 were updated today.

Federal Rulemaking and Calls for Comment
