Brian Moyer Named New BEA Director Brian Moyer was named Director of the Bureau of Economic Analysis, bringing more than 20 years of experience in economic statistics to the post. His new status as Director takes effect Sept. 21. Dr. Moyer is currently BEA’s Deputy Director and has served as Acting Director since May 2 when the agency’s previous chief retired. He joined BEA, which is part of the U.S. Commerce Department, in 1993 and held several key positions including Associate Director for Industry Accounts.

Introducing the Statistics in Schools Program Statistics in Schools supports statistics education by providing grade-appropriate classroom activities in math and history, and many resources ? such as maps, news articles, videos, infographics, and games ? for K-12 teachers to use. Staff from all areas of the Census Bureau worked together to create these activities, which are available online at no charge.

Smart Chicago is gathering as much information they can about as many practitioners they can find, so that they can amplify the great things local practitioners do. Census, NCHS Meet Ahead of Release of Insurance Data On September 16, the Census Bureau and the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) will release the first federal statistics on health insurance coverage during the period after the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The agencies held a technical meeting on August 18 to go over what will be released later this month and provide background on the methods used in the respective household surveys.

Visualizing Terrorist Activity Since 1970 Portland, OR-based data visualization company Periscopic has created ?A World of Terror,? an interactive visualization of the 25 most prolific global terrorist groups and their activity since 1970. The visualization covers groups as disparate as the Irish Republican Army and Boko Haram and shows the number of incidents for each group, along with the numbers killed and wounded, for each year the group was active. The data, which comes from the Global Terrorism Database, reveals that terrorist groups have been active in 73 countries on five continents, with France the most commonly targeted country.
