Mapping Where Electricity Helps Patients The Department of Health and Human Services has released a mapping tool called the emPOWER Map that visualizes the varying concentrations of Medicare patients with electricity-dependent medical devices. For patients that rely on ventilators, motorized wheelchairs, and other powered medical devices, a power outage could pose a substantial health risk. With this tool, emergency responders and community organizations can identify these populations by each zip code, to better plan for and respond to power outages. The visualization also displays weather alerts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for each zip code to warn users about weather conditions that could lead to a lapse in electricity.
