NIST on the Search for Innovative Mobile Apps The National Institute of Standards and Technology is looking for apps to showcase its wealth of data, so it’s turned to the public for help. NIST just launched a competition in which participants create a mobile app that showcases one of six of the agency?s eligible data sets, according to a notice posted in the Federal Register.

States Should Use Open Data to Empower Consumers State regulators have focused their efforts on making specific information available to consumers, such as airline baggage fees or home mortgage terms, which disclosures can also lead to improved business practices. However, regulators should also consider how they can unlock additional data sets to enable the development of sophisticated choice engines that help consumers make wiser purchasing decisions in areas of the economy where the market lacks transparency.

The Tools and Technology (T2) database provides information on machines, equipment, tools, and software that workers may use for optimal functioning in a high performance workplace.

Mapping Where Pollution and Poverty Collide The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched a data visualization tool called EJSCREEN that combines pollution data with demographic data from the U.S. Census Bureau to let users observe how certain populations might be disproportionately affected by harmful environments. The visualization displays environmental factors, such as air particulate count and lead paint, alongside demographic indicators such as income level and race.
