Today is Data Innovation Day!

 

Join the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) in the first annual celebration of Data Innovation Day on January 24, 2013.  The theme this year is “Big Data.  Bigger Opportunities.”  The purpose of Data Innovation Day is to raise awareness about the benefits and opportunities that come from increased use of information by individuals and the public and private sector.  Learn more here.

 

 

Census Bureau’s Mobile App Tracks Our Economy

The Census Bureau’s “America’s Economy,” mobile app provides real-time updates for 16 key economic indicators from the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics and Bureau of Economic Analysis.  Key economic measures on employment, manufacturing, international trade, retail sales, and residential construction and sales allow those who follow the U.S. economy to be the first to see whether the indicator has gone up or down since the previous report, and trends over time.  Learn more here.

 

 

Department of Treasury Holds Finance Data Initiative Webcast

Data sets published by Federal agencies are increasingly being harnessed by private-sector innovators to empower consumers to take control of their financial lives.  Recently, Treasury hosted a Finance Data Convening and Working Session to highlight the variety of features, apps, products, and services that use finance data released by Federal agencies.  Senior officials from the White House, Treasury, the IRS, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the Department of Labor, the Social Security Administration, and the SEC joined over 50 private-sector leaders for a day devoted to data and innovation.  See the webcast here.

 

 

Yelp, San Francisco Partner to Publicize Health Inspection Data

In an effort to improve public health and data transparency, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee announced on Thursday, Jan. 17, a partnership with Yelp, a site that connects people with local businesses and restaurants.  The goal?  To link the city’s restaurant health score data with the popular restaurant review website — and to standardize health score data nationwide.  Read more here.

 

 

Census Data Mapper: Beta Version Now Available

Are you interested in creating maps that display 2010 Census Population and Housing data for use in reports, presentations, or general viewing?  If so, then the Census Data Mapper is an application you should explore.  The beta version of the application is now available here.

Calls for Comment

 

APDU maintains a list of open calls for comment on proposed federal data collections.  We periodically alert APDU members to newly added calls for comment.  Over the last several weeks, calls for comment on the following proposed data collections were published in the Federal Register (with due date):
