When Data Drives Innovation

The top 25 programs among this year’s applicants for Innovations in American Government Awards were announced, and among them are many that are embracing the kinds of technology-enabled creativity that the new Harvard Kennedy School initiative, Data-Smart City Solutions, stands behind.  Crowdsourcing, data collection and analytics, and smart infrastructure, in particular, cropped up multiple times as ways to help a variety of government bodies better serve citizens.  Read more here.
 

 

Job Openings Feature Added to O*NET OnLine

O*NET OnLine users can now search for job openings on the web from Summary, Details, and Custom report pages.  Select your state of choice and find job listings using mySkills myFuture, or access state and national job banks using CareerOneStop.  Check out this new feature here.
 

 

Leveraging Open Data, Building Apps for Public Safety

One of the core goals of the President’s Safety Data Initiative is to empower first responders and the public with information to make the safest and smartest decisions when they need it.  In support of this goal, there has been a proliferation of innovative public safety apps—a number of which have been highlighted at the OSTP-supported Safety Datapalooza—using open data from local governments and Federal agencies.  Read more here.
 

 

Measuring America: County Business Patterns Interactive Map Update

In conjunction with the release on the 2011 County Business Patterns, the Census Bureau has updated the Measuring America County Business and Demographics Map.  The map provides an interactive, easy-to-understand overview of how many types of businesses are in your community or anywhere else in the U.S.  The map includes 2011 County Business Patterns statistics combined with demographic statistics from the 2010 Census.  Check out the map here.
 

 

A Deep Dive in the US’ National Action Plan: Declassify National Security Information

President Obama’s Executive Order on Classified National Security Information, EO 13526, required the creation of the National Declassification Center at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).  The President gave the NDC a deadline of December 31, 2013 to eliminate the extant backlog of almost 400 million pages of classified historical records.  The Center is charged with leading a multi-agency effort to declassify historically valuable classified records in which more than one agency has an interest, and with working to address the massive backlog of classified records previously accessioned by NARA.  Read more here.
