American Community Survey (ACS) Data Products Survey
The U.S. Census Bureau?s American Community Survey Office (ACSO) is conducting a survey to gather data user feedback on ACS data products. You are invited to provide feedback on the content of the ACS data products and usage of geographic areas, the coinciding documentation currently provided on the ACS website, as well as the way in which ACS data products are accessed and disseminated. Please respond no later than May 29, 2015.

BLS Blog Post on ACA and the NCS
With the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the National Compensation Survey has worked to evaluate the potential effects on the cost, coverage, and provisions for the employer-sponsored health care data it currently publishes; and explore possibilities for future collection and publication efforts. The approach has included researching the details of the law and evolving regulations, listening to the suggestions and concerns of stakeholders, and testing collection of new data elements. 

 

How Community-College Data Fall Through the Cracks
Community colleges have recently been thrust to the forefront of higher-education policy. Coverage of issues regarding community colleges has included a sprinkling of community-college statistics, some of which may be skewed by leaving out certain institutions that are traditionally thought of as community colleges.

 

WIOA Rules Address Performance
Proposed Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) regulations posted on the Federal Register website establish the foundation to more effectively use wage records for performance reporting.

 

New & Updated Data Sources

 

New Estimates of Personal Taxes
The Consumer Expenditure Survey provides information on the buying habits of American consumers, their income, and personal taxes. In 2013, the survey improved its personal tax data, which consist mainly of income taxes. The survey previously asked respondents how much they paid in taxes. Now the survey estimates taxes from a program developed by the National Bureau of Economic Research. This Spotlight on Statistics looks at these new tax estimates.

 

NIST Drafts Big Data Framework
The National Institute of Standards and Technology wants to make sure everyone means the same thing when they talk about ?big data.” In an attempt to standardize big data discussions, the Commerce Department agency issued a draft ?Interoperability Framework,? defining data analytics-related phrases, outlining management templates and describing common use cases for large data sets and other large amounts of information traditional data architectures can?t efficiently handle.

 

Visualization of the Week

 

Visualizing the Rise of Megacities
The data team at The Economist has created a visualization that illustrates the global trend towards urbanization. Using demographic data from the United Nations dating back to 1950, the data team tracked the growth of global city populations over time and projected their expected growth until 2030.
