Secretary of Commerce Names Interim Census Leadership

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced the interim leadership of the U.S. Census Bureau under the Vacancies Reform Act, effective upon the retirement of Census Bureau Director John Thompson on June 30. Ron Jarmin will perform the non-exclusive functions and duties of the Director. Enrique Lamas will perform the non-exclusive functions and duties of the Deputy Director of the Census.

 

2017 APDU Annual Conference

The 2017 APDU Annual Conference agenda has been heavily influenced by the interests and activities of our membership. The conference planning committee received a big assist from the APDU members who submitted proposals to present at the event on September 13 – 14, 2017 in Arlington, VA. Breakout sessions will feature topics including data visualization, data privacy and security, the Commission on Evidence-Based Policymaking, and more.

Researchers Use Census Data to Improve Education

A report issued from the Institute for Immigration, Globalization, and Education at UCLA and the ACT Center for Equity in Learning highlights the nation?s racial and ethnic diversity and provides ways for data-collecting agencies to improve their methods. The report, titled ?The Racial Heterogeneity Project: Implications for Educational Research, Practice, and Policy,? examines racial inequity in education and offers recommendations based on research about structural barriers that need to be overcome in order to improve educational outcomes for racial groups.

Mapping Mobility in the District of Columbia
The Washington, D.C. Department of Transportation (DDOT) launched an interactive dashboard called District Mobility that maps performance measures, such as public transportation ridership, average commuting time, and bike lane availability, for the D.C. transportation system. District Mobility uses data from a variety of sources including the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, the U.S. Census Bureau, and DDOT to create interactive maps of Washington, D.C. and the surrounding metro region. DDOT will use these visualizations to help address mobility issues within the transportation system such as reducing congestion, increasing reliability, and improving accessibility.
